"Social reformers are never, ever liked. They are always unpopular
because they are always confronting a culture that doesn't want to know
more about injustice for which they bear some responsibility." -Gregg
Cunningham, Esq. Executive Director for The Center for Bio-Ethical
Reform

This topic is a sore point for me. The following is blunt and to the point.
Short version -
If it's not your penis or vulva, LEAVE IT ALONE!
Long version -
(As Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is not common or legal in the USA,
I am using the terms penis and foreskin. However, my feelings are
the same regarding girls. Yes, girls are protected federally and
boys are not. Tell me how this is logical or fair?)
The foreskin is there for a reason. It is not "extra" skin.
It protects the glans (or head) of the penis, keeping it clean and sensitive.
When the foreskin is removed the glans is constantly rubbing on diaper/underwear
and essentially becoming calloused and desensitized.
Babies DO feel pain and remember it. RIC is performed without
anesthetic in virtually all cases. Imagine one of your first experiences
being excruciating pain. Infants often pass out from this pain.
Many mistakenly think their "baby slept through the whole thing", when
in fact the baby is in shock.
Another thing about babies and pain - obviously babies cannot say, "Yes,
that hurts". They can cry or whimper or withdraw, but they might also
do that if they were simply startled. We don't know if they experience
pain the same way a person that can speak does. But, why, oh why,
don't we err on the side of caution and assume that they do feel pain?
A comparison of male and female anatomy and male circ and female circ
originally posted on Mothering.com by member Frankly Speaking
"...infibulation is much worse than male circumcision however, infibulation accounts for a very small percentage of female circumcisions. Of the other four types of female circumcisions, none are as bad as the typical modern male circumcision.
The problem is that you equate appearance with function and that is not
legitimate. Just because the clitoris and the penis have a somewhat
similar appearance does not mean they have the same function. It's like
trying to say that because male and female breasts have a very similar appearance that they function the same. No one would ever try to say that.
There are three functions that are similar in the male and female
sexual organs. That is pressure, tactile and stretching. Those
functions are located in different parts for males and females so you
have to look at the functions that are being affected to make a
comparison to male and female circumcision.
The tactile sensory receptor in the female is the clitoris. In the male, it is the frenulum. In modern male circumcision,
the frenulum is cut away with the foreskin and is therefore
non-functional just the same as cutting away the clotoris makes it
non-functional.
The stretch receptor in a female is the vaginal sphincter, In the male, it is the preputial sphincter which is always cut away.
The pressure receptor in the female is the G-spot and in the male, it is the glans. Both of these remain after both male and female circumcision. They are both able to trigger an orgasm and thus become the primary sexual organ in the male and usually the primary sexual organ in the female although many genitally altered women also retain their clitoris.
The inner mucosal foreskin and the labia also have sensory receptors for both the male and the female. Sometimes the labia is cut away in FGM. In the male, about 2/3 of the nerve endings reside in the distal 1/3 of the foreskin. In a male circumcision,
2/3 to 3/4 of the mucosal foreskin is removed so that very few of these
nerve endings remain. Additionally, keritinization desensitizes those
few that remain so that they have a greatly reduced function.
So, if you look at the two and compare them from a functional viewpoint, for a female circumcision to have the same sensory function effect as male circumcision,
the clitoris, clitoral hood, the labia and the vaginal sphincter would
all have to be removed. This totally ignores the fact that the bared
glans in male circumcision suffers desensitization from keritinization so that in the end, male circumcision is more damaging than all forms of female circumcision except the most invasive type that includes infibulation. Less than 5% of female circumcisions include infibulation.
I hope that helps you understand the similarities and differences in the two."
Some reasons given for RIC are:
- "We want him to look like his father." - How many
fathers and sons do you know that compare penises? If a boy's hair
color doesn't match his father's, will you keep it dyed/bleached?
If his ears/nose/mouth/whatever is different, will you make him have cosmetic
surgery?
- "It reduces infections." - What other body parts
do we cut off preventively for infection? What other body parts
do we cut off to cure infection? Kids get lots of ear infections.
Should we amputate their ears. Many women and girls get reccuring
Urinary Tract Infections (UTI). What parts should we cut off them?
- "It's more hygienic." - Again, what other body parts
do we cut off to keep cleaner? If you can teach a boy to wash his
hands, you can teach him to wash under his foreskin.
- "Uncircumcised men give their partners cervical cancer."
- Recent research has indicated this to be false. And anyway,
shouldn't this be a risk/benefit choice of the two parties involved?
- "I like the look of circed over intact." - That's
fine. You may have a circumcision or choose a mate with a circumcision.
Your son may feel differently. It is his choice to make.

Information on forced retraction-I especially love this: “Parents
of an intact boy often know more about the structure, functions, and
development and care of the normal penis than their son’s physician.” Because it is so true! Includes legal remedies should a care provider injure your son.:
